You can tell it's midsummer up north when you start to see dog boxes in the pickups of bear hunters. Bear dog training started July 1. Most of the time now the bear simply outdistances the dogs because they are not in shape. As the dogs get more in tune ther will be more bears in the tree. There seems to be good bear numbers and some baiters have already started to bait.
The deer herd seems healthy and it should be another good year. Due to the Chronic Wasting Disease outbreak the DNR has imposed emergency feeding and baiting bans. The ban includes the use of salt and mineral. The fine if caught is 1183.00. The ban goes til January 1st,2003. The use of feed plots is legal. At Sportsmans Headquarters we carry both annual and perennial seed for productive food plots.
The ban will change some hunters tactics, now is the time to start scouting patterns if you hunt before the rut. Look for natural food sources like acorns. Find them and you will find deer.
Bowhunters, everyday we are getting in the newest in Bowhunting accessories.
Yesterday we received the new soft Alpine bow quivers that absorb vibration so they are more quiet. The new targets are in now and the newest in treestands should be here soon.
Mark you calendar, on July 19th Ted Nugent will be in Bloomer at the Renegade Archery factory for a meet and greet. Ted is the new spokesman for Renegade Archery.
Duck and bird hunters, now is the time for sharpening your skills by practicing with clay pigeons. The Minong area has a great shooting range just east of Minong down the Taylor Lake road. It's maintained by the county and it's open to the public.
